2009 A record-breaking day in Tullamore
One of the best days’ athletics seen in this country took place in Tullamore on 30th May when the annual All-Ireland Schools’ Track & Field Championships produced a host of outstanding races and performances which included fourteen new championships best performances.
Pride of place must go to the young athlete from Assumption, Ballynahinch, Ciara Mageean who not only destroyed the schools’ record set by Elizabeth McWilliams in 2004 but, also, set a new National Junior Record of 2.05.38 beating Sonia O’Sullivan’s mark in the process. Here we must also commend Ciara Everard, Presentation Kilkenny, who chased Ciara all the way and was inside the previous best as well. There was some consolation for Ciara Everard when she later won the 400m, while Ciara Mageean was an easy winner of the 1,500m later in the afternoon.
